INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

In Conversation with our Founder

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women reshaping industries and redefining what leadership looks like.

To mark the occasion, we sat down with our founder, Mireia Llusia-Lindh, to reflect on building DeMellier and the role female founders play in driving meaningful change.

With female empowerment a core value at DeMellier, we asked Mireia to share her perspective on the path to gender parity.

WHAT DID YOU SEE IN THE INDUSTRY THAT MADE YOU WANT TO BUILD DEMELLIER DIFFERENTLY?

The women’s fashion industry is powered by women, yet leadership at the top has long been disproportionately male. It made me question how many of the crucial decisions shaping products for women were being made without women’s voices in the room.

That imbalance was something I set out to change from the beginning. I wanted to build something that reflected a different perspective – where female voices are heard and valued at the highest levels of decision-making.

HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE THOSE CHALLENGES FIRSTHAND?

As a former consultant, I was often the only woman in the room when presenting to clients. But despite being outnumbered, I rarely felt my credibility was in question.

That changed when I moved into fashion and began building a business. I saw how differently women were perceived as founders – especially when it came to being taken seriously, accessing capital, and being backed with the same confidence as men.

This experience made one thing clear: representation in leadership matters. When women are underrepresented at the top, inequality is not just cultural – it becomes structural, shaping who is heard and who is given the opportunity to lead. Changing that takes persistence.

“Women do not need permission [to lead], they need opportunity and the confidence to build on their own terms.”

HOW DO YOU EMPOWER WOMEN AT DEMELLIER?

From the beginning, it was important to me that women had a strong voice within the company. Women hold senior leadership roles and help shape the decisions that guide our direction and long-term ambitions.

I also wanted DeMellier to serve as a platform to celebrate and unite women – from our annual ICONS campaign spotlighting female change-makers, to our all-female design team and fair living wages for the female artisans who bring our designs to life.

AS A FEMALE FOUNDER, WHAT DOES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MEAN TO YOU?

For me, it’s a moment to reflect on how important it is to keep creating opportunities for women to lead, to be heard, and to shape the industries they’re part of. Women do not need permission, they need opportunity and the confidence to build on their own terms.

That’s why International Women’s Day is both a celebration and a reminder – recognising the women who continue to drive change, while acknowledging that real equality still requires intention and action from all of us. Progress doesn’t happen only in business or policy, I believe it starts in our homes, in how we share responsibilities and support one another. We all have a role to play in keeping that momentum moving forward.
